Tomatillo is a particularly popular vegetable in Latin American cuisine. Most of Lithuanians might have heard something about tomatillo (and I have no doubt that even seen one), but in Lithuanian cuisine tomatillo is used very very rarely. In US green tomatillos can be found in most of the supermarkets or Latin American stores. I haven’t seen yellow tomatillos here yet, since the most popular ones are the green ones.
In comaprision with tomato, tomatillo taste is a bit more acidic, but this vegetable is not so juicy and it’s quite firm, therefore it’s good for making salads and salsas (tomatillo doesn’t soften as fast as tomato).
Avocado and tomatillo salsa is ideal with tortilla chips, perfect with tacos, fajitas and other Mexican dishes. Also, green salsa is very delicious with barbecue dishes, chicken or any other dish that needs some extra flavor.
P. S. Don’t forget to remove the husks from tomatillos before using them!
