Buckwheat with Bacon and Onion (no boiling)
Buckwheat is one of the healthiest grains, providing not only energy, but also helps with digestion, obesity, cholesterol, blood pressure and other problems. These small grains itself contains a variety of vitamins and other substances the body needs. So if you don’t use buckwheat in your daily diet, I strongly recommend to start using it. Buckwheat dishes are not only healthy, but delicious as well. The buckwheat taste is slightly different from other grains, but as well as from other grains you can prepare a wide variety of meals using buckwheat. 🙂

One of the simplest dishes of Lithuanian cuisine – buckwheat with bacon and onion. Typically, I boil buckwheat, but this time I just soak them in water. The taste is exactly the same as the boiled buckwheat, you just need to wait until the grains are swelling.

Ingredients

    • 1 cup raw buckwheat (~ 250 ml)
    • 2 cup cold water
    • ~80-100 g bacon
    • 1 medium-sized onion
    • salt, black pepper
    • sunflower oil for frying

    Recipe Directions

  1. 1. Put the buckwheat in a bowl, pour the water and stir.
  2. 2. Leave the buckwheat to swell for about 2 hours until the buckwheat absorbs all the water. Before that, you can pour the buckwheat into a sieve and rinse with cold water, but that’s optional. Also, you can leave the buckwheat to swell overnight.
