Lazy unstuffed cabbage rolls
Lithuanian cuisine cannot be imagined without zeppelins (a.k.a potato dumplings) as well as without stuffed cabbage rolls (in Lithuanian they are called balandėliai (little pigeons - no one knows wy). And I, as a big Lithuanian cuisine lover, am a stuffed cabbage roll lover as well. Well, but the whole preparation process of stuffed cabbage rolls sometimes simply takes a very long… Starting of cabbage boiling, rolling out each roll, then frying each of it and eventually simmering them… There are such days when there is no time and patience for preparing such meals. And after couple hours spent in the kitchen an awesome taste pays back for all that precious time and efforts.

For those, who like stuffed cabbage rolls, but have no desire to spend several hours cooking them, I highly recommend trying these unsttuffed cabbage rolls. The taste is almost the same as of traditional stuffed cabbage rolls, but it takes twice less time and effort. An ideal recipe for lazy ones! 🙂

Ingredients

    • mix of ground beef and pork: 500 grams (1.1 lb)
    • cooked rice: 100 grams (1/2 cup)
    • onions: 1 medium-sized
    • carrots: 2 medium-sized
    • cabbages: 1/2 small
    • water: 300 mililiters (1 1/4 cup)
    • tomato sauce: 3 tbsp.
    • heavy cream: 3 tbsp.

    • sour: 2 tbsp
    • herbal seasoning for ground meat: 1 tsp.
    • salt: 2/3 tsp.
    • ground black peper: 1/3 tsp.

    Recipe Directions

  2. 2. Then peeled onion and carrots. Diced the onion, grated carrots using larger grater. Cut the cabbage into thin strips.

  4. 3. Took a large skillet, first I put a layer of onion, then a layer of carrots and added cabbage. Poured over half of water.
  5. 4. Then I made small meatballs from ground meat and put them on cabbage.
  6. 5. In one bowl, mixed together remaining water, tomato salsa, ketchup, sour cream and heavy cream. Poured the mixture on made meatballs, covered the skillet with a lid and simmered for 30 minutes over lower medium heat, then turned over the meatballs and simmered for another 30 minutes over low heat.
  7. 6. In addition, vegetables can be seasoned with salt and black pepper to taste. Do not be afraid that it might look too much of vegetables in a skillet, but at the end of simmering vegetables will become very soft and decrease by one-third. Lazy meatballs are very tasty just with the veggies, but it’s also very tasty with boiled potatoes or bread.
